TPS82130: Overheating of the IC.

Using TSP82130 to step down 12 V DC to 4.2 V DC.

Issue:

When we gave 12 V input the power module was drawing current more than 1A.

When we reduced the voltage to around 5V the output was dropped to 3.2V while the expected was 4.2V and after a while, the IC burnt.

Now when we tested another module we connected Ground Pin(Pin 3) to the heat sink(i.e. thermal pad. Now there is no output on the output pin.

Kindly Help in solving this issue

Hi Nisarg,

Can you please provide the details of the schematics (input and output capacitors values, your load nature, how much current is the load drawing, etc.)
Additionally, can you also provide the layout of your design?
The IC should function normally from 12V and down to roughly 4.5V and then the output voltage will follow the inout voltage as the chip will operate in 100 mode.

Hey Omar,

Vin=12V

Vout =4.2V(required)

Vout=3.2V(achieved)

Cin=10x10 uF

Cout=22x10 uF.

We haven't connected any load to the Vout pin yet.

We haven't designed the PCB board for the module, we are still testing the IC. Once it works according to our requirements we will use it in our application.

My question is whether or not I should connect the thermal pad to the ground pin as :

Case 1 (When we grounded the thermal pad)- The IC burned.

Case 2 (When we did not ground the thermal pad)- No output on the Vout pin.

I don't really understand how you are testing the device. To help users better understand the system's performances, evaluation modules (EVM) are available on ti.com. I recommend you to order an EVM for this device.
