BQ40Z50-R2: bq40z551 charging question

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2

Hello expert,

My customer is using bq40z551 on their NB project. They found out charging current will be clamp at ~380mA for about 3s after system is back from intel Turbo mode(battery discharging at Turbo boost) then get back to normal charging current. They are wondering if gauge clamps charging current at 380mA for 3s. Do we have algorithm or firmware flow will keep charging current after system is getting back from Turbo mode? Thanks a lot!!

Best regards,

Ann Lien

  • Hi Ann,

The charging current depends on the settings. During a turbo mode dsg, the current spikes lasting for 10s or so will reduce the terminal V of the pack, with this it is possible that the pack may briefly enter a low voltage state. Now, if per the charging algorithm, the voltage detected is below the low voltage threshold, the current may be limited. We can easily modify this by adjusting the V I thresholds in the advanced charging algorithm section.
