BQ28Z610: Gas Gauge and Protection Solution

Part Number: BQ28Z610

Dear colleagues,

I am evaluating the BQ28Z610 integrated circuit in order to combine in with two-cell Li-Po or Li-Ion battery. My goal is to have, as stated in datasheet, gas gauge, protection, but also a battery charger.

At this moment I am not 100% sure about its charging ability because I didn't saw that anyone has used it as a charger but only as a gas gauge and protection IC, and in the headline, it is stated that this IC is a gas gauge and a protection solution, without noting the charge feature which is not a small thing.

On the other side in the description, there is a paragraph that says the following:

The Texas Instruments bq28z610 device is a highly integrated, accurate, 1-series to 2-series cell gas gauge and protection solution, enabling autonomous charger control and cell balancing.

I would like to use this IC because it simplifies a development a lot since it integrates all three things in one IC that I need. So, I will be very grateful for your comments and experiences with this IC.

Best regards

Marko

  • Hi Marko,

You are correct. The bq28z610 is only a gauge with an integrated protector. You will need a separate charger to supply the chg current. I believe what was intended by that statement was to say that the gauge has protection features that prevents overvoltage, overcurrent in chg, overcurrent in dsg and so on. This when combined with the fact that there are charging V and charging I register helps smart chargers to provide the appropriate V and I.

Please feel free to post questions here if you need more help.

  • Hi Batt,

Thank you very much for your quick response. In that case, I will need to add a separate charger for that. It seems that I wanted so desperately to have all in one IC :)

Thanks again and have a nice day!

    Marko
