BQ40Z60: Buck Controller Control Architecture

Part Number: BQ40Z60
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24610

Hi Battery Management Team,

What control architecture does the BQ40z60 integrated buck employs? The datasheet suggest a fixed-frequency scheme, but I'm seeing frequency fold-back at light loads (during current taper).

Regards,

Leo

  • Hi Leo,

The controller is “voltage mode controlled”, there is no frequency adjustment to the controller oscillator with the operational mode.  There is the potential to skip ON pulses if the output current becomes sufficiently low, such as during current taper.

  • Hi Batt,

Thanks for the answer, which I also got help. I have an additional question.

Which Synchronous Buck Controller is the most similar to which built in the bq40z60? Of course, among the TI product family.

The reason why I ask this is that I have struggled with the EMI of my bq40z60 board, where the buck part dominates the emission. So I am building a similar Buck controller board to diagnose the EMI.

  • It's the bq24610.
