TPS2HB08-Q1: Fault acknowledgement

Part Number: TPS2HB08-Q1

Hi,

One of my customer is interested to evaluate TPS2HB08-Q1. They have below query. Can you please comment.

"It looks like the device provides a common fault indication for open-load and short circuit condition. Is there a way differentiate whether the fault indication is due to open-load or short circuit?"

  • Hi Naveen,

Thanks for reaching out on E2E!

By looking at the fault indicator, there is not a way to differentiate between a fault indication due to an open-load versus a fault indication due to a short circuit. Could you elaborate on why you want to distinguish these conditions?

    Best Regards,

    Elizabeth

  • Hi Elizabeth,

Customer did not disclose the reason to distinguish the conditions. He is interested to test the device, if there is a way to differentiate, even using some additional circuit around the device.

  • Naveen,

To differentiate between an open circuit and a short to battery condition, you can set EN = 0, DIAG_EN = high. and if SNS is high (if there is a fault), check the output. If the output voltage is equal to the supply voltage, then you have a short to battery. If the output is not equal to the input voltage, then you have an open circuit. This could be done through resistor dividers and logic circuitry at the output.

    Best Regards,

    Elizabeth
