UCC5350: Use of IPMs with frequncy higher than 20Khz

Part Number: UCC5350

Hi,

We were thinking of going for an IPM (Intelligent Power Module ) for our application of a motor driver. We happen to find out that there isn't any IPMs with operating frequencies higher than 20Khz which is something we wanted for our application. Do you have any details of IPMs that work at VDC= 300V-400V IDC = 10A and have a frequency drive possible of more than 20Khz(Perhaps closer to 30Khz)?

  • Hi Tony,

    Thank you for your question.

Typically, IGBT based IPMs are tuned for 20kHz operation to reduce audible harmonics, and since switching losses start to dominate past this frequency. They can probably be switched faster, up to 30kHz, but it will be hard to find an IPM that has been rated for this frequency. I can’t comment on specific modules and how they will perform though.

We’ve seen Silicon Carbide IPMs which are rated for much higher switching frequency, but this comes with other design considerations which need to be handled.

Is there any particular reason you would like to up the switching frequency to 30kHz over 20kHz?

If this answered your question, could you please press the green button? If not, please feel free to ask more questions.

    Thanks and best regards,

    John
