Hi,

In BQ24610, there is one timer option. With TTC pin we can set the charge current safety time.

What I understood from the datasheet is, with this pin we can set charging time and after this it will disable the charging.

My understanding is correct or not?

I just want to know whether the IC will monitor the battery voltage?

without timer option whether the IC will disable the charging when the battery is full by monitoring the voltage ?

Shafeeq,

Yes. The charger charges with constant current (CC) until the battery reaches the battery regulation voltage (CV) and charge current naturally tapers to the termination current value (as the battery cell finishes charging) unless the safety timer expires first.

Hi Shafeeq,

The fast-charge safety timer provides another level of protection, terminating the battery charging if the timer expires due to an unexpected system failure. For BQ24610 we provide TTC to customize fast charge safety timer (as well as enable/disable termination), and an inbuilt 30 minute precharge timer.

The BQ24610 IC is also continuously monitoring battery voltage through the VFB pin, and battery will charge according to Figure 13. Typical Charging Profile from the datasheet. So yes, if you disable fast charge timer, the charger will still terminate according to sensed VFB voltage.

Hi Kedar,

So the timer is for additional protection. I can't understand what you meant by system failure. If the chip has some failure, then how it will disable the charging when the timer expires?

Hi Shafeeq,

System failure is not referring to the IC. If something in the system causes battery not to charge and prevent reaching termination, the user has the ability to configure the fast charge safety timer to end charging. This provides a second layer of protection,a s otherwise charger would continuously trying to charge if the IC itself doesn't sense any issues.
