LMG1020EVM-006: Removing On-Board Load Resistors

Part Number: LMG1020EVM-006

Hi, does anyone have any tips on removing the onboard load resistors? They are very close to the GaN and driver caps, so they seem difficult to remove. Does anyone have experience removing these resistors successfully? I am worried that I might accidentally damage the board and/or the GaN without a very high level soldering setup. I am trying to test a high powered short pulse laser diode with this EVM.

  • HI Bryan,

Thanks for reaching out on this and welcome to e2e!

I have removed them with a solder iron (one in each hand) with a sharp point or mini tweezers with not too much difficulty, just make sure you are using a microscope to allow better soldering accuracy and flux to help the heat and solder to spread. You can also use a small nozzle heat gun to apply a localized heat to just that area. Use preheat under the board to make the solder process easier. I found it harder to replace them than remove them. Let me know if you have any more questions or cant get them on with your current solder setup.

    Thanks,

  • Thank you Jeffrey, these tips helped a lot. It was still a bit difficult with the setup we have but we were able to eventually get them off to test our diode.
