TPS23880: 40W, 8CH Individual configuration

Part Number: TPS23880

HI

We are planning to develop PSE module related to POE and want 8ch configuration with 40W power for each channel.
If you look at the datasheet, you should apply 2Pair to all, and it seems that 40W class design is possible, and I think you have to use two TPS23880 to construct 8Ch. Is this my idea?
Or, you can use a single TPS23880 to make sure that you can design 40 watts for each 8ch.

If you have additional 40W schematic for your design and applicable FET, please share.
Also check if the output voltage can be designed as negative.

  • Hi KIM Andy!

When you mention 8 channel configuration, are you referring to 8 RJ45 ports or 8 power channels? One TPS23880 IC can support either 8 2Pair RJ45 ports or 4 4pair RJ45 ports since the 2pair ports only require one channel and the 4pair ports require two channels.

Are you hoping to send 40W from the PSE or receive 40W at the PD? Power sourced greater than 30W generally falls under the Type 3 umbrella and should be implemented with 4pair to be compliant to the IEEE802.3bt standard. For more information on 2pair VS 4pair for your design, I would suggest reviewing this similar E2E question -->

Since the standard defines the acceptable voltage range as between 41.1-57 volts, the output voltage should not be designed as negative to remain compliant.
