BQ24070: Why does BQ24070 get hot when not connected to a load?

Part Number: BQ24070

Hi BCP team,

I am posting this question on behalf of my customer.

"We have a battery pack (2 18650 cells in parallel) at 3.7V, 7000mAH connected to the BQ24070RHL.

So far we have produced approximately 150 battery packs and 3 of those have had this issue.

Our battery pack plus BQ24070 is designed to plug into and out of our device.

For all 3 failures the issue has been the BQ24070 gets hot with no load on the output (i.e. not connected to our device).

We measured the current on one of the bad packs and it was drawing 1A of current from the batteries.

We can “reset” the bad state by unplugging the 18650 battery pack from the PCA and plugging the battery pack back in.

We were not trying to charge the battery in any of the 3 cases."

Some further information:

- The TMR pin has an 82.5K resistor tied to GND.

- This issue occurs without an input adapter being plugged in; we are not in charging mode.

Thank you very much!
Lauren
