BQ27520-G4: Keeps resetting

Part Number: BQ27520-G4

Hi,

We have a problem with most of our BQ27520-G4 chips where the chips keep resetting randomly but frequently. I've measured VCC and CE to be stable when the reset occurs. Most of the time the voltage is 0V and as far I understand it means that the chip has just booted and has not finished sampling the voltage. Sometimes the chip isn't even showing on I2C bus. I've also tested this by pushing the device type value (0x0520) to the control register and few seconds later the register value changes to something else.

This might be a HW bug on our side since couple of the chips on our boards seem to work okay but is the problem that I described something that you have encountered? Is there something else that I could test in order to resolve the root cause of this issue?

  • HI Eutu

The kind of problem you describe tends to occur when you have poor soldering joints  or when there is a lot of EMI/ESD in the area you are testing your board.

You need to check for these two points. This chip has been shipping for years and this kind of issue is not one synonymous with a defective chip.

    thanks

  • Here's a response from my manager:

"In addition to X-ray imaging, soldering has been checked by casting the circuit board into epoxy and then precision grinded the solder points  and photographed them through the microscope.

There is no fault in the soldering of either method.

How should we proceed in trouble shooting?"

  • Hi Eetu,

ESD/EMI could be the next culprit to check for as per my previous reply. Given that it doesn't occur on all the units, susceptibility to ESD/EMI may be the root cause.

    thanks
