LM2596: Cout selection

Part Number: LM2596

Dear all,

Our customer would like to know about contents of LM2596's datasheet.

Could you answer the following questions?

The following is described on p.23 of the data sheet.

Please tell me the reason why a capacitor of 820 μF or more can not be used for Cout.

Also, please tell me what kind of things can be considered when using a capacitor of 820 μF or more for Cout.

Best Regards,

Y.Ottey

  • Hello Y.Ottey,

My understanding is that this is related to stability and internal compensation of the LM2596. Larger output caps result in the gain rolling off at lower frequency, causing a relatively low loop bandwidth. Also, a larger output cap requires a higher current at startup, assuming a fixed soft-start time.

    Regards,

    Tim
