TPS92691: External Gate Driver

Part Number: TPS92691

Hello

We use the TPS92691 driver IC to supply an LED flood light with up to 120 W. Because of this, we have a lot of switching losses.

Our current impression is, that SMD components (MOSFET) performing better than THT. However it is much easier to conduct the heat away from the component.

Would you recommend an external GATE drive to reduce the switching losses of a THT MOSFETs?

  • Hi,

You can test with external gate drive or you can use lower gate charge FET's or slow down the switching frequency.  With external gate drive there can be power up and low voltage operation so you have to watch out for that depending on your application.

    Thanks Tuan
