Hello,

Is there a document that shows step by step how to configure the safety parameters for this gauge which has safety built in?

also please point to any other documents for BQ 28z610 for calibration and register configuration.

Hi Gaurav,

Sorry, we don't have a document related to safety. However, the default config is per a 4.2V, 4440mAh cell. You can use that as a reference for your system. All the technical documents are available here, http://www.ti.com/product/BQ28Z610/technicaldocuments

Hi Batt,

is the battery protection thresholds a part of the internal firmware as well or are they purely hardware controlled. if the internal state machine locks up will the safety protection not function anymore?

The datasheet recommends the sense resistors for cell balancing to be between 100ohms and 1k. in the application example Rvc2 is 5ohm and Rvc1 is 100ohm. can i increase the Rvc2 from 5 ohm to a higher value like 10ohms or more?

Hi Gaurav,

We have both afe related hw protections as well as fw protections. All your COV, CUV, OC, OT, SCD, SCC protections etc are controlled by fw. The AFE protections provided by hardware are AOLD, ASCD, ASCC. Both are programmable. If the state machine locks up, you will get a WD reset. That will open the fets.

Do not change the resistors, if you do, you will have to change the cell balancing equations.

1. when the DSG FET trips due to a undervoltage condition, does the gauge enter a low power state to prevent further discharge of the cell?

2. The shutdown threshold is set to 2.3V by default. what happens when the gauge hits this threshold? what is the typical current consumption in this mode?

3. When the CHG or DSG FET trips, does t he i2c communication stay active?. will the host be able to communicate with the pack even when the undervoltage threshold has caused the DSG to trip?

1. No, it merely opens the dsg fet. If you have no comms with the gauge it will enter sleep and thereby consume less power.

2. It will automatically shutdown. In shutdown the current consumption is about 0.5uA typ and 2uA max.

when the gauge hits the under voltage shutdown at 2.3V and shuts down to prevent further cell discharge, does it still allow i2c communication with the host?.

No, if the gauge is in shutdown, you need to wake it up to communicate with it.
