BQ79606A-Q1: Will OV/UV monitoring continue from where it was if cell balancing is paused.

Part Number: BQ79606A-Q1

We have a requirement to perform OV/UV monitoring for 10mS then cell balancing for 10mS, this is to be repeated until balancing is complete.

Tcycle for OV/UV monitoring and cbdone threshold monitoring is 17mS

The user guide states "During the cell balancing cycle, with CBDONE enabled, the OVUV function is paused (if enabled)."

If cell balancing is paused for 10mS will OV/UV monitoring continue from where it left off

<----- OV/UT Monitoring (10mS) -----><----- Cell balancing (10mS) -----><----- OV/UT Monitoring (10mS)  -----><----- Cell balancing (10mS) ----->

                    ^                                                                                                                                     ^

OV/UT starts here                                                                                       result expected 7mS into this period

Thanks

  • Hi Mark,

    [EDITED FOR CLARITY]

Thanks for your question! Here is the way this works:

Assuming that the OVUV function has been enabled BEFORE balancing begins:

OVUV will stay on during balancing IF you do not enable the CB_DONE_THRESH comparator.

OVUV will pause once the CB_DONE_THRESH comparator is enabled. The comparator is enabled internally only at the beginning of the round-robin cycle, and therefore the OVUV will pause at the beginning of the round-robin cycle. It will resume from the point at which it was paused, which will be at the beginning of the cycle.

OVUV will resume once CB_DONE_THRESH is reached.

Let me know if you have any additional questions!

    Regards,

    Vince

  • Hi Vince,

Thanks for the rapid reply, but I am still unsure about one point.

    User Guide Section 8.3.5.1.1

The CBDONE function overrides the OVUV function (if enabled). During the cell balancing cycle, with CBDONE
enabled, the OVUV function is paused (if enabled).

    User Guide Section 8.3.6.1

The OVUV function will not function if enabled during cell balancing as it uses the CB* inputs for sensing.
Additionally, during the cell balancing cycle, with CBDONE enabled, the OVUV function is paused (if enabled).

I am using the cb_done_thresh function to terminate balancing for a particular cell and we are pausing balancing and expect OVUV monitoring to be resumed at that point as the user guide suggests.

What we are trying to determine is if the round robin functionality continues from the point it was paused at or restarts..

    Regards

    Mark

  • Hi Mark,

    I apologize for the delay!

To answer your question, the round-robin will continue from the point that it was paused at. However, CBDONE (which is what pauses OVUV) is only enabled at the beginning of the round-robin, so this means that the OVUV will always continue from the beginning of the round-robin.

Let me know if you would like further clarification on this! I've also edited the first response for better clarity on how the system works.
