Part of the questions were answered in the following thread:

Using split resonant capacitor (2 resonant capacitors in bridge connection) instead of 1 capacitor helps to reduce input ripple current.

I don't think it helps to reduce transformer size. The current flows through transformer doesn't affected by single or split resonant capacitor connection.
