LM5045: LM5045 CT best location

Part Number: LM5045

Hi Support team

In the LM5045 application note (snva468 / 628), the position of the CT is different.
Please help me to confirm the difference? which one is better and why?

Thank you for your assistance, thank you.

  • Hello Red,

You can place the CT in series with the primary winding as in SNVA-468C.

The primary voltage on the CT is a symmetrical bipolar signal max duty cycle here is 50% or less so there is no danger of the CT saturating.

The CT will measure the primary current and it has an average DC value of zero.

Or you can place the CT on the primary high voltage DC side as in SNVA628A.
This will measure the total current into the primary and can measure a shoot through in the event of a fault condition.
The disadvantage is that there is a limitation on the max duty cycle because the CT needs time to reset.

These are the advantages and disadvantages of both applications and it is really up to the designer to choose the best solution for their application.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards
