BQ76930: After ESD testing ,the reserved bit field set to logic high

Part Number: BQ76930

Hi,

Refer to below picture, customer found after ESD testing the five reserved bit field have probability be set to logic high.

They had tested 2 board and one board can be clear after reset MCU to re-initial bq76930. The other one could not

clear until  remove all battery.  They want to know why and when these bit be set to high. And how to avoid.

Whether these reserve bit influence bq76930 working?

Thanks

  • Hi Jeff,

Reserved bits may be just extra bits or may have functions attached. If registers are changing with ESD the part must be experiencing incorrect commands from the MCU or a severe stress disrupting the registers.

Recovery may be possible by setting the CTRL bits back to 0, sending the part to shutdown, and booting the part again.  However if the part has experienced a severe upset it may not work.  It would be best to direct the ESD energy away from the ICs such that no disruption occurs.
