BQ24650: Solar charger and Li-Ion charger on same design

Part Number: BQ24650
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25601

Hi Team,

My customer is interested in adding a expansion board that would connect to their design.

This expansion board would enable solar charging and so would include bq24650 and a battery.

On the main board, they have the bq25601 already.

Are there any system level concerns that they should be aware of?

Can they connect the output from bq24650 directly to the bq25601 or should they bypass it?

Thanks!

  • Hi Joey,

The short answer is yes.  During constant current charging, the output of each charger is a constant current source and constant current sources can be tied together.  When the battery gets close to full charge and both chargers have switched to constant voltage, there is the risk of the chargers turning on and off as one terminates and then the other etc since each charger will have silently different regulation point with its own tolerance.  So, you would want to ensure that one of the chargers terminates much earlier than the other.

Of course if you configure so that only charger can operate at a time, then this is not an issue.

    Regards,

    Jeff
