LM5122: What the maximum power LM5122 can support?

Part Number: LM5122
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5170

Hi Expert,

I see LM5122 integrated with a 3A gate driver, could you tell what's the maximum power that LM5122 can support with single phase converter? Below is the basic spec for one application. customer want to use two phase in parallel, so each phase should support up to 1.5kW. If LM5122 can't support such high power level, can they realize this by adding external deriver?

Input voltage: 48V

Output voltage: 72V

Power level: 3000W

  • Hi Yan,

The LM5122 is an controller with external MOSFETs, so the power level is mainly decided by the external component selections.  It is ultimately how much heat that you can manage to disperse, because higher power will have higher power dissipation, and most power dissipations are caused by the MOSFETs, inductor and current sense resistor.  The LM5122 datasheet gives formulas to calculate the MOSFETs power dissipation.  The inductor and current sense losses can easily be estimated by R x Iin^2.   On the hand, we h ave ref designs of the LM5122 which can support up to 200W.

For you 1.5W, you should consider the LM5170 in the boost configuration.  The standard EVM can support 700W.  You can use 4 phase (2x EVM) to demo 1.5kW.  The EVM power is limited by the inductor selections.  Please contact our team if further assistance is needed.
