LMR14020-Q1: ILIM current flow

Part Number: LMR14020-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMR14020

Hi, Team,

The average or effective value is less than 2A of the Continuous Output Current specification, but the peak exceeds the minimum value of 2.13A of the Current limit specification of this DCDC converter.

Is it ok to flow the ILIM peak current continuously?

Best Regards,
Satoshi Yone

  • Hi,

The minimum current limit ILIM is 2.13A per data sheet spec., if the continuous load current is close to 2A, then the inductor ripple current (Kind) should be designed to below 13% to keep the inductor peak current below 2.13A, otherwise the output voltage will drop and peak current is limited at 2.13A continuously.

  • Hi, Andy,

Thanks for your answer!! The customer can accept the voltage drop and the peak current limitation, but they cannot change the design. They plan to use the device with the ILIM condition(Ipeakmax is 2.15A), so please let me know if there is any concerns.

  • Hi Satoshi,

LMR14020 use frequency fold-back mode for over current protection, the chip will keep continuous switching at same freq if Vout drop between 100% and 60%, just as you mentioned that flow the ILIM peak current continuously
