TPS650864: Question about TPS6508641 power for PS Domain and PL Domain

Part Number: TPS650864
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS650861, , TIDA-01393

Hi team,

My customer is using TPS6508641 to supply for Xilinx FPGA. They have 2 questions as below:

1. For PS domain, Xilinx FPGA datasheet said Vps_MGTRAVCC needs to be 0.85V as below picture. But in our datasheet Figure-6-9, the VTT LDO output for Vps_MGTRAVCC is 0.9V. So is it wrong in our datasheet?

2. For PL domain, TPS6508641 doesn't have the power rail for VMGTAVTT and VMGTAVCC of ZU2CG-ZU5EG. But TPS6508640 have the power rail for PL domain VMGTAVTT and VMGTAVCC of ZU7CG-ZU15EG. Customer is confused about this. Can you help check?

Thanks.

Best regards,

Wayne

  • Hi Wayne,

    1. For the VPS_MGTRAVCC, the specification was changed from 0.9 V to 0.85 V after the Ultra96 board was developed. My understanding is that while 0.9V is not officially supported, the 0.9V would only make it perform slightly better at the cost of additional power usage. The official recommendation for new designs is to use an external LDO instead of VTT LDO or to use one of the LDOA2 or LDOA3 instead but that requires using a customized version of the TPS650861 based on TPS6508641.

    2. The Ultra96 EVM does not have VMGTAVTT or VMGTAVCC. My understanding is that it varies based on use case which power rails customers need.

While TPS650864 is a good reference point, many customer designs will require customization. The TPS650861 is the user programmable version of the TPS650864 and includes OTP Generator files for all versions of the TPS650864 which customers can use as a starting point to get their desired power. Units can be programmed in the BoosterPack or ordered pre-programmed from Avnet or Arrow.

  • Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your reply. Echo to your reply, please see customer feedback as below:

    1. Customer plans to use an external LDO to supply for VPS_MGTRAVCC. But customer still wants to take advantage of VTT LDO. So they want to use VTT LDO(0.9V) to supply for VMGTAVCC. Is this OK?

    2. Customer is interested in our TIDA-01393. Can we provide the TIDA-01393 board to customer for test?

    Best regards,

    Wayne

  • Hi Wayne,

    1. VMGTAVCC timing just recommends it be powered before VMGTAVTT, other than that I see no issue using it for this purpose.

    2. Unfortunately we don't generally stock TI Designs. We provide the full design files to have one built, but don't have any pre-built on our side.

The TPS650860EVM-116 could be used to evaluate the TPS650864 family devices though, it would just need to have some components reworked (like feedback on BUCK1) to match their desired use case. It would not include the load switches but can represent Always-On Power Map Example use case fairly well.
