BQ79606A-Q1: monitoring cells connected in parallel

Part Number: BQ79606A-Q1

Hello Team,

I have a very basic question on cell balancing circuit.

For a 48V system, one of my customer is planning to use 14S24P configuration. Can they use a single channel of BQ79606 to monitor all 24 cells in parallel? then only 3 devices are needed. However, if one of the cell goes bad, they won't be able to figure our location of faulty cell.

or is it necessary to have individual channel of BQ79606 across each cell. that will require 3X24 devices, which is very huge.

Thanks in advance,

Mahendra

  • Hi Mahendra,

Typically there is no extra benefit to having multiple devices monitoring cells in parallel as they will naturally tend to the same voltage but it may take a little bit longer to balance. It would be a good idea to closely monitor cell voltage fluctuations, charge/discharge timings and the current/temperature to ensure all cells are operating correctly as this can be more difficult to keep track of the more parallel cells you add.
