TPS63020EVM-487: Inquire TPS63020 EVM can't support 3.3Vo@2A

Part Number: TPS63020EVM-487
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS63020, TPS63802

Hi Sir,

Currently my customer test TPS63020EVM, Vin=2.6V, Vo=3.3V, and they would like to support output current to 2A.

But TPS63020EVM can’t support 2A load, and we can’t find any 3.3Vo@2A test data or waveform for customer reference.

May I learn from you do you have any suggestion can help us bring up the TPS63020EVM to support 3.3Vo@2A or have some test data/waveform can share to my customer?

Thank you for your kindly help.

Edward Chen

  • Hi Edward,

What is the input voltage range? According to the datasheet, the TPS63020 can support Vout=3.3 V, Vin=2.6 V, Iout=2 A, although, it is close to the limits. Take a look at Figure 2 of the datasheet.

You can also check the TPS63802, which has a similar package and specifications as the TPS63020, but higher output current at low input voltages.

    Best regards,
    Milos

  • Hi Milos,

If TPS63020 can support Vout=3.3 V, Vin=2.6 V, Iout=2 A, do you have any test data or waveform for customer reference?

    Thank you.

  • Hi Edward,

Yes we have the test data, Figure 2 from the datasheet that I showed in the post above. Did the customer try the TPS63020 under the same conditions?

    Best regards,
    Milos

  • Hi Milos,

Yes customer test the same condition and find out the EVM only can support around 1.7A, can you verify the EVM in your side for us?

    Thank you.

    Edward

  • Hi Edward,

I tested one EVM, and it supported 2 A initially, but after some time the output voltage started to drop, probably because of the heat. I will have to check if the figure in the datasheet refers to continuous operation or short periods.

On the other hand, I also tested the TPS63803, and it was able to continuously deliver 2 A at ambient temperature.

    Best regards,
    Milos

  • Hi Edward,

For the given conditions, the TPS63020 can support output current up to around 1.8 A. Figure 2 from the datasheet refers to the short-term maximum output current. Under continuous operation, the output voltage will start to decrease, together with the maximum output current.

The TPS63802 has higher output current capabilities, and can support up to 2.3 A continuously under the same conditions. Other benefits of the TPS63802 are smaller package, smaller passive components and lower Iq. Other than that, the functionality of the TPS63802 is very similar to the TPS63020.

    Best regards,
    Milos
