For DC Power Design Suggestion

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5025, UCC2897A, PMP5123, PMP

I  want  to design the DC power 100W (isolate )that the input voltage is 12/Vdc / 24Vdc,  , the output voltage is 12Vdc , ,

I had used the LM5025/5026 .

Do you have other Suggestions? Thanks!

  • Hello Cliff,

Please refer to the PMP5123, it is an active clamp forward design using UCC2897A, it suits your application to the tee.

  • Hi Cliff,

The thermal performance is dependent on a number of factor

    1. the max ambient air temperature

    2. natural convection of forced air cooling

    3. PCB copper thickness and ability to heatsink the power components.

The PMP5123 may be a stretch at 8A but you may be able to use it if you have forced air cooling from a fan.

  • Dear

This explanation gives me a very uncertain answer.
It seems that I can also use this IC to use the 1000A state
    Under certain conditions
    1. the max ambient air temperature
    2. natural convection of forced air cooling
    3. PCB copper thickness and ability to heatsink the power components.

Each IC has a planned scope when it was originally designed.

Instead of letting the user try the scope of the IC , try and error again and again.

This will make users feel that IC manufacturers are not very professional in this regard.and Not familiar with your own products,

  • Hi Cliff,

In many cases the power supply control IC's doe not limit the power handling capability of the power stage, TI has many IC's that can be used in 100W to 10kW designs, the power stage simply scales around the control IC.

The power delivery capability is determined by many factors and it is a complex topic. The PMP reference design may be suitable for your application but you have not responded with any information about your application and the environment that it has to operate in.

  • Dear

    Thank you for your reply
But I don't agree with you.

Because any IC manufacturer has already defined it in the early stage of design development.
Which IC is mainly designed based on market demand, and is designed for what power range products, and what level of MOSFET can be driven (Never meet to all design request )

    For example:
PMP512A is mainly used for 10~100w power supply in the market. It can be used with MOSFETs below 10A. Efficiency meet more than 90%.
PMP512B is mainly used for 100~500w power supply in the market. It can drive MOSFETs below 10A~20A. Efficiency meet more than 93%.
PMP512C is mainly used for 500~1000w power supply in the market. It can drive MOSFETs above 20A. Efficiency meet more than 95%.

These detection voltage and tolerance range can be used in the market request.

    I can't use PMP512A on 1000W power , It couldn't meet the request.

  • Hi Cliff

The PMP5123 has been tested up to 7A at 25C with no airflow, 8A load condition is an extra 15% which is not a big stretch. Many dc/dc applications have forced air cooling and I have detailed a number of factors which affect the thermal performance eralier in the thread.

It is rare that TI has an exact match between the reference design and the customer requirements. The expectation is that the reference design acts as a starting point for the customer modify it for their application.
