TPS23861: TPS23861 PD with wrong class

Part Number: TPS23861

Hello,

if using the TPS23861 for PDs for the Standard PoE 802.3af. Let us say , we only support 15.4W each port.

What will happen when a POE+ PD is plugged in with 30W?

Does the controller just give 15.4W max or does the overcurrent detection intervenes and the controller shuts down?

Kind regards

  • Hi Jerome,

If the PD is class 4 and PSE is in auto mode, the PD should supply 30W to PD. If you want to limit the output power of PSE to 15.4W even a class 4 PD is connected, you will need to disable the 2 event classification (register 0x21), set the device in semi-auto mode(register 0x12) and send power on command (register 0x19) after PD is connected. Thanks.

    Best regards,

    Penny
