TPS2549: Automatic Enable/Disable control

Guru 19645 points
Part Number: TPS2549
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25810

When in the case of DCP mode only (1.5A), is TPS2549 have automatic ON/OFF control?

For example; when USB charging port is disconnect, customer want to change disable output without external pin control.

(EN and CTL1~3 pin are always fixed on first setting)

Datasheet is described about DCP auto mode, but auto ON/OFF control is not described on datasheet.

Best regards,

Satoshi

  • Hello Satoshi.

No, the TPS2549 does not have automatic ON/OFF control for the output as 5V is always present on VBUS, regardless on if a device is connected or not. You would need external control for the EN pin if you wish to control the output for the TPS2549.

If you are not constrained to using a Type-A port, you can use the TPS25810 which is a 5V DFP Type-C port controller, and Type-C in itself does not provide 5V on VBUS unless a device is detected

    Thank you for reply,

I confirming to attach auto ON/OFF function on TPS2549.

One idea is voltage detect to 5V_BUS from Reset IC and output to TPS2549_EN pin, is it no problem?

    5V_BUS ⇒ Reset IC ⇒ TPS2549 EN pin

I hope that Reset IC is TLV809I50 because customer required low cost.

  • Hello Satoshi-san,

Want to make sure I am understanding correctly. Are you wanting to implement circuity where the TPS2549 will be enabled once 5V has been presented on VBUS? This application will not work as in an example of when a portable device is connected to the TPS2549, then the TPS2549 (charger) is responsible for putting 5V on VBUS. If you wait until 5V is on VBUS to enable the TPS2549, then the device will never be enabled as 5V will never be put on VBUS, regardless on if a portable device has been connected or not.
