TPS2595: Formula to calculate Isc

Part Number: TPS2595

Hi Team,

Could you tell me the calculation formula for Isc in TPS2595 datasheet 8.3.3?

Best Regards,

Kenji

  • Hi Kenji,

Isc is a internal threshold to detect short  circuit current. This parameter can not be calculated using a formula. As the parameter is not characterized we have not mentioned its value in the datasheet.

Is there any reason why you need this parameter ?

  • Hi Praveen-san,

My customer is trying to evaluate the boundary between short circuit operation and current limit.

In doing so, you need to know where the threshold is set.

Please tell me the setting Isc threshold.

    Best Regards,

    Kenji

  • Hi Kenji,

The value of Isc is not close to the current limit. It is greater than 10A.

The reason why Isc is set much greater than Ilimit is because,

    • at the instant of output short circuit condition the input capacitance provides the peak current (as it has very low impedance compared to the input supply for transient events) which triggers the short circuit protection of TPS2595.
    • The short circuit protection circuit needs to act really fast and to achieve this you loose on the accuracy of the current limit. Therefore, we set the Isc much above current limit as the peak current in the IC which triggers the short circuit protection is anyways supplied by the ceramic input capacitance.

  • Hi Kenji,

Hope your query is solved. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
