TPS61160A: ESD Test failed

Need your strong support here.

My customer are performing ESD test on the TPS61160ADRVR. The test will be performed from voltage +-2kV up to +-15kV. It is reported that during the -5kV test, TPS61160ADRVR has shutdown and not able to auto recover. However, when they reboot the power source manually only(Unplug and plug the AC) then the LED driver is able to boot and working again.

May I know what is possible failure for this ESD test? Can TPS61160ADRVR theoretically able to pass the 5kV test?

Hi Yang,

Can you describe the detail method of ESD test? from our spec side of view, it can only support 1kV for CDM ESD test and 4kV for HBM ESD test. So what knid of test they did?

Hi Sean,

My customer use electron gun did Air contact test on the TPS61160A driver. This LED driver will connect to a 9V display panel. They have short the front panel of their product where ESD might be occurred.

They have tested +/-5kV and +/-10kV ESD test. +5kV & +10kV has passed the test, whereas -5kv & -10kV has failed.

1.) If i want to have workaround on this, May I know uni-directional or bi-directional TVS would be best for this?

2.) What is the best clamping voltage needed for TVS for output voltage of 9V to panel, or any other factors need to consider for TVS selection.

3.) I also have found some thread in e2e forum, where they recommend to put resistor on the the LED driver.

if customer place a series resistor at pins FB and SW is OK?? and what would be the proposed resistor values?

hi ZY,

Since your customer failed the -5kV/10kV test, so bi-directional TVS would be best for this;

I think it would be larger than 9V is ok for the clamping voltage;

You can try to insert the resistor but I'm not sure whether this would be helpful;

As for the TVS the Clamping voltage Vc, and Reverse Stand-Off Voltage Vrwm, both parameter need to be more than 9V?

What is the recommend Vesd value for choosing the TVS in this case?

As for the resistor, any proposed value TI can recommendation?

Hi ZY,

As for reverse stand-Off voltage, it depends on the working voltage of your device. The reverse stand-Off voltage should be greater than your working voltage to avoid thermal issues.

Larger than 9V is ok for the clamping voltage.

No recommendation.
