WEBENCH® Tools/LM2596: Is it possible to increase current by using a buck converter?

Hi Team.

I'm designing a circuit for increasing current. I have at the input 20V 500mA but I want something like 5V 1A or more than 1A in the outup. I've try using webench in order to get a design but Webench doesn't allow me to control the current at the input, only the voltage can be control. So my first question is if it's possible tu use a buck convertir to get the result I want? The second is how can I simulate it and control the current valor at the input.

Hello Awa Tendeng,

Can you please let me know more about your applicaiton and why you have the constrainsts on Input Current. Input Current of a buck converter will always depend on this equation : Iin = (Vout.Iout)/Iin. Buck Converters are not designed to regulate on Input Current, it only regulates output voltage.

Thank you for your replay.

I'm using a solar panel for powering a DC Motor. The solar panel produce around 10W. When I mesured the current and the voltage, I've found something like 20V 500mA. I want 5-7V 1-1.5A for my application.

Hi Awa Tendeng,

Buck cannot give a control on input current. It is always Iin = (Vout.Iout)/Vin.

So is it possible with Webench simulator to give the valor of the input voltage and current and mesure the output voltage and current?? Or to use virtual instruments like low frequency generator?

With webench you can only give the value of Input Voltage, Output Voltage and Output Current. And this formula gives you the Input current i.e. Iin = (Vout.Iout)/(Vin*eff).
