BQ40Z80EVM-020: Timeout or unexpected response communicating with device

Hello, 

I am trying to use the evaluation board for the bq40z80.  When trying to interface it with the bqStudio 1.3.86, I can not seem to communicate with the bq40z80 properly.  

Here is a screen shot of the registers screen:

It seems to be able to pull the temperature, but that is it..

The software is unable to read the Data Memory, or write to them.  I also can not write to the Firmware.

I have attempted to read pins TS3 and TS4 to see if there is a pulse upon pressing the "Wake" button, but see no pulses.

I updated the on-board EV2400 chip to the latest firmware, V0.28.  No changes in operation..

Any advice?

    Hi Chris,

    Please download and use the bqstudio test version. I believe the 1.3.86 is not compatible with the bq40z80.

    I have previously attempted this, however the test build immediately crashes after display the splash/logo.  "An error has occured.  See the log file".

    Update:

    Uninstalling and deleting the C:\ti\BatteryManagementStudio folder, then installing the test build allowed the test build to run without crashing.

    This however did not solve my original problem and I still have the same issue as originally posted.

    Please advise..  This seems like a capable chip and we would really like to use it if we can get it to talk to this GUI..

    Hi Chris,

    It may be that the gauge is shutting down because of the config defaults. Please try keeping power on the PACK side. Once you have PACK voltage greater than shutdown threshold, the gauge will stop shutting down and you can communicate with it.

    Batt,

    I have attempted your solution, however it unfortunately led to no changes.  I bridged BAT+ to PACK+, and probed the connections to ensure that my set voltage of 25.2 volts is in the proper locations.  At this point I am convinced that the chip or board is DOA.  Perhaps I can submit to get this eval board swapped?

    Hi Chris,

    Once the BAT and PACK side have power, please check the thermistors on a scope. If you see the TS pin pulsing, then it means the device is still alive. If that's not the case, please open bqstudio and use the advanced comm smb tab. In that please read word 0x0d. If you get a response to that, it means you have to program the fw again or the device is in ROM mode.

    Batt,

    I tried measuring for a pulse on both the TS pins, but found no pulses.  I proceeded as you instructed to the advanced Comm SMB tab and read word "0x0d"

    This is the result:

    So I proceeded to the "Firmware" tab to program the latest firmware to the bq40z80.  

    At first, the message in the bottom left corner of bqstudio stated that was a checksum mismatch..  I could not get the program button to work..  Then as I was writing this, I hit program again and it miraculously started working again.  I fiddled with things on the board, trying to get it to shutdown.  I then rebridged the PACK and BAT connections.  After that is when I hit program one more time. 

    Anyway, it uploaded the new firmware (the execute checkbox was checked too).

    It seems to be working now!!  I am stoked!  Lots of settings to dive into now.
