BQ40Z50-R2: Need a bit of Help to Interpret Log File

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2

Hi All:

I am trying to sort out why my application is turning off prematurely.  I have the log file (see attached) and noted the change is status of SAFETYSTATAB I tried to use the maunal to look it up, and assume it is in the Black Box section but did not find the direct cause.  I see it changes from 0000 to 0001.  Any ideas how how to trace it back to the trigger?

Thanks,

Joe190909depletion_400W.log

  • Hi Joe,

Can you please reupload the file. I'm not able to open it.

  • Hi Batt:

I will attach again but this time use my excel file format.  I have found the issue being one weak cell hitting protection.  But given an answer to one question, starts another question.  During the draw the voltage drops to the protection point, but as soon as halt current the voltage pops up and will clear the protection after the delay.  I believe the BQ chip has a way of adjusting thresholds given the current draw.  What is the typical method to control the cycling and what are the battery health impacts.

  • Hi Joe,

A weak cell in a pack can definitely affect the SOH of the pack. Your chg ability and dsg capacity will be limited by the tendency of the cell to go COV or CUV. At CUV, other cells will try to compensate for the weak pack, however, if they are at low RSOC, the effect of capacity loss will be more pronounced. The only solution is to change out the weak cell.
