Part Number: LMR14020-Q1

Hi everyone

If the bootstrap capacitor is not connected b/w SW and boot pin or if the capacitor is shorted then  what will be the affect on the regulator, will it work or not.

Please provide me answer with respect to this regulator and also as a generalized one as well

  • Hi Irbaz,

Converter normally monitors voltage on bootstrap cap Cboot all the time during operation, it has higher priority to refresh and maintain the voltage above boot voltage UVLO for properly driving high-side switch. If the Cboot cap is open, it will trig UVLO immediately once the device try to turn-on high-side switch, then device will stop switching to refresh the Cboot, so the high-side switch will never be fully turn-on. If the Cboot is shorted, then device will try to refresh or charge up Cboot all time and never start the normal switching phase.

In both case, it has potential to damage the converter if the internal refresh circuit has no voltage clamping or current limitation function.
