LM25180: Inductor selection

Part Number: LM25180
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5160, SN6501

Please support on below:

For LM25180 flyback converter, we need to pick a transformer (or a coupled inductor) that works with the part and also meets the following requirements:

1) Input voltage: 5v, Output voltage: 5v, Max current: 100mA

2) AEC-Q200 qualified (at least -40C to +125C)

3) At least 2kV of isolation

4) Preferably small footprint

None of the recommended transformers in the datasheet of LM25180 meet these requirements. Can you please suggest a part for our application?

  • Hello,

A unity turns ratio transformer with Lmag > 10uH would work. One option is a coupled inductor, for example Coilcraft LPHR8045-223 (already used in a reference design with the LM5160 Fly-Buck) or LPD5030V-103. Both of these are rated to 1.5kV. However, you will need to consult with the transformer vendor to see if the full 2kV isolation is possible. Q-grade qualification is also feasible but may depend on volume, etc.

Take a look at app note snva805 for details on transformer design. Also, use the LM25180 quickstart file available by download from the product folder.

Note that as an alternative, you may also consider the SN6501 push-pull converter for this application, assuming the input voltage is fixed.

    Regards,
