TPS1663: TPS16632

Part Number: TPS1663

Hello,

In our design we are using TPS16632 set to 6 amps current limit, 6 volt under volt shut down and 100W PLIM. We are having a problem when operating in the 8 or under input volts. The IC blow up we see a hole in the IC near the input power pins. What would cause this issue? We have tried with PLIM disabled with the same results.

  • Hello Dennis,

What was the output current when input voltage was 8V? If the device is going into over-current or overload and turn-off the internal FET. With no input cap and TVS on input pins of TPS16630, the voltage at IN pins can overshoot and damage the device.

It would be recommended to add at-least a cap > 0.1uF at IN pins.

A TVS diode (Similar to SMCJ36A) would also be required if there is long cable connected to power input (POWER_WALL_IN or VEHICLE_BAT).

Please refer to Section 11.1 in the datasheet.
