Dear Team:
My customer used TPS2042B for USB port, they are worried that surge voltage will damage TPS2042B when hot-plugging USB, so they want to add another TVS at PIN 6 and 7. How to choose the clamping voltage of this TVS?
Thanks!

Hi,
Please see page33.
For hot-plugging, will generate high surge current.
You can increase the output cap to suppress the surge.
For USB application, with USB2.0 spec, 120uF electrolytic capacitor is needed.
You can also refer to Figure42 of datasheet.

Hi sir,
I am out of office and also need to have a check about the ABS.
Will reply to you tomorrow.
Thanks.

Hi Eric,
Please refer to the following link.
http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slvae37/slvae37.pdf
The clamp voltage selection is according to your application scenario.
The above link has explained it in details.
In general, VRWM is close to the Maximum value of normal operation. VBR is below ABS value.
