ULN2003A: Driving with a PMOS input 18-30V

Part Number: ULN2003A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ULN2002A

Hello,

I have to drive the ULN2003A device with a PMOS output with a range from 18V to 30V.

Do you have any suggestion in order to resolve this problem ?

Thank you for all the attention.

Best Regards,

Daniele

  • Hi Daniele,

For inputs voltage that large, I would recommend the ULN2002A which is pin to pin compatible and is functionally similar to ULN2003A.

The input on ULN2002A should be driven with voltages ranging from 14V to 24V.

Do note that 30V is the abs. max on this device.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Shreyas,

    thank you for the suggestion.

But if I have to use ULN2003A, could I use a solution like the input stage of ULN2002A ?

In other words, could I insert a Zener and a resistor in series between the 18...30V input and the ULN2003A ?

I expect that the Zener voltage should be increased from 7V to 7+4 = 11V because the 7V value is suited for an input range of 14V....25V.

Or it is better to use a Zener in parallel in order to realize a fixed 5V TTL voltage instead.

    Thank for all the attention

    Best Regards

    Daniele

  • Hi Daniele,

I would not recommend either of those options and instead use ULN2002A. It is pin to pin compatible and can operate over 14V to 24V input safely.

It may be possible to mimic the input stage but there is no saying if it will work or not.
