TPS61256: Operation at the short connection BTW A1/A2 and A3

Part Number: TPS61256

Hello,

In the TPS61256 pin assignment, Vout (A1, A2) and Vin (A3) are adjacent to each other.

If these (Vout and VIN) are short-circuited due to mounting failure, how does the IC work?
5V output should not be output clearly, but will the IC continue to work to get 5V? Or is there a function to stop the operation?

Best regards,

H.Someno

  • Hi Hidekazu:

Our experts who support this device are currently on holidays. I am sending them a notice.  Please wait until Tuesday to get their advice.

Besides, I'm interested the purpose of this question. Do you want it continual supply the load without regulate, or afraid of damaging the fore-stage?

  • Hi Minqiu-san,

    Thanks for your support.

I will wait for comments from your experts to this question.

This question is for the verification as design FMEA at a customer. There was no particular problem.

  • Hi Someno-san,

If Vout and Vin pins are short-circuited due to mounting failure, Vout pin voltage keeps the same with Vin. Because FB pin voltage is always less than reference voltage, device will change the duty cycle and try to draw more current from input to increase Vout. Finally the device will keep switching but fsw now is less than typical value 3.5-MHz and inductor current keeps at high, similar to short circuit condition. The IC will be hot in this case.

In this case, just set EN pin logic low to disable the device.
