UCC20520: UCC20520 PCB Cutout

Part Number: UCC20520

Hello,

In datasheets and EVM, there is PCB cutout under UCC20520 and in datasheet it is explained with "There are no PCB traces or copper between the primary and secondary side, which
ensures isolation performance" sentence.

My questions are:

- Did you use this device with no PCB cutout and did you observe that it lost its isolation performance ? If yes, do you have technical data you can supply ?

- Is this cutout configuration only a suggestion or is this a compulsory to work with this device properly ?

  • Hello Arin,

Since this device is rated for reinforced isolation, if the application required reinforced isolation the spacings across the IC will be determined by the working voltage and the agency required spacing such as in UL 60950. As shown in the datasheet package information, the device can support up to 8.1mm spacing across the PC board, if the spacing requirement is higher, the PCB cutout will increase the creepage distance between the IC pins.

Your application including the operating environment such as contamination, or pollution degree, and humidity will determine if the isolation performance may be a concern if there is no cutout in the PCB. Your product safety requirements, not the IC, will determine if you need the PCB cutout.

Confirm if this addresses your question, or you can post additional questions on this thread.

    Regards,
