TL431: What circuit would act as a super-cap balancing circuit?

Part Number: TL431
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ33100

Do we have a tool or integrated part that can work as a super-capacitor balancing circuit that will work beyond 5V? Temporary soulution is to build a 5.25V shunt regulator out of a TL431 and a big PNP transistor to protect each double capacitor in their stack. Do we have anything more integrated?

  • Hi Lauren,

Is the 5V limitation a reference to the BQ33100?

What is the expected super cap voltage?

  • Hi Lauren,

If you're trying to balance supercapacitors in series with an integrated solution, the bq33100 may be able to help as it provides balancing for 2-5 super capacitors in series.  The recommended operating condition per supercapacitor is 5V, with an abs max tolerance of up to 8.5 V per supercapacitor.

If you could share a few more system levels details here, it would be helpful.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler
