BQ78350-R1: cell balancin not in charge

Part Number: BQ78350-R1

Good morning,

the BQ78350-R1 does not allow the cell balancing if the battery pack is not in charge state. The reference manual clearly reports such a condition: "Cell balancing only occurs when charging current is detected, ..."

Why there is such a limitation? Is there any way to bypass it?

In fact in several applications the balancing actions must be active also at the end of a charging phase (I've found several BMSs with this characteristic), otherwise a complete and perfect balancing cannot be performed (i.e. the balancing is almost unuseful).

If there are no other important reasons, I would suggest to create in a future firmware release also a configuration flag to enable the balancing when the battery pack is not in charge.

Thank you and best regards

Matteo

  • Hi Matteo,

Unfortunately, there is no way to modify this feature with the current device. You are correct, some of our other devices do not have this limitation. We will definitely consider this if there are any future firmware releases.

    Best regards,

    Matt
