LM5164-Q1: Regarding heat countermeasures

Part Number: LM5164-Q1

Hello.

Related to the last time.
e2e.ti.com/.../3101293

We are examining heat countermeasures in the following cases.
We are also considering attaching a heat sink to the top of the package.
Question
1 Can you tell me how to calculate heat when installing a heat sink?
2. Is there an application note for attaching a heat sink?
3 Regarding the following calculations
Ta = 70 ℃
When surface heat rise is 48.1 ℃,

Tj = Ta + (Ψjt + Pd)
= Ta + (Ψjt + ⊿Tc / Rca)
= Ta + (Ψjt + ⊿Tc / (Rja-Rjc (top)))

Ta = 70 ℃
Ψ jt = 6.7
⊿T = 48.1 ℃
Rja = 41.1 ℃ / W
Rθjc (top) = 37.3 / W

From Rca = 3.8 ℃ / W
Tjmax (@ 70 ℃) = 154.8 ℃. Is this calculation method OK?

This condition is the condition when the load is short-circuited.
Is the Tj = 150 ° C rating exceeded?

Thank you.

  • Hi ,

       We don't have many references about heat sink. Very few customers consider attaching a heat sink to the top of the package. I think you can search on the Internet.

       Yes, you can do a rough thermal calculation like that. But Rja in the datasheet is rough, which varies in different board.

       If so, yes, Tj = 150 ° C rating exceeds.
