BQ78350-R1: How to communicate with the BQ78350?

Part Number: BQ78350-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350, EV2400, BQSTUDIO

How do I communicate with the BQ78350 after making the PCB? How do I view the lifetime data log after its deployed for use? Do I need to provide I2C/SMB headers on the PCB to be able to connect to the EV2400 module and use Battery Studio to communicate?

I will be using a microprocessor to read data from BQ78350 and display it on a TFT screen.  It will communicate with the BQ78350 using SMbus, in that case do I have to power off the MCU before I connect the BQ78350 too EV2400 for programming or reading data from it?

  • Hi,

Please note that the BMS engineers are presenting this week during our yearly BMS Deep Dive in Dallas and may not be able to answer quickly to your question. Thank you for your understanding!

Please check out more information about this event here, in case you want to join next year.

  • Hi,

You have the right idea - you need a way to connect to SMBus on your board if you want to connect to BQStudio through the EV2400. You can also read lifetime data with your MCU if you do not want to connect to the EV2400.

If the MCU and EV2400 are writing to the SMBus at the same time, this could cause a problem. It is probably best to power off the MCU while connecting to the EV2400.

    Best regards,

    Matt

  • Hi Matt,

    Thank you for the reply.

If I leave the SMBus headers on the PCB, Can anyone having access to the PCB, BQStudio and the EV2300/EV2400 can read/modify the settings and data on the BQ78350?

If yes, How do I prevent unauthorized access?

    Thanks.

  • Chapter 11 of the BQ78350-R1 Technical Reference Manual describes the device security features. You can Seal the device to prevent access to data flash and to limit the SBS functions.
