BQ76PL455EVM: Replacing Onboard Passive Cell Balancing

Part Number: BQ76PL455EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76PL455A-Q1

As per the requirement, I want to replace the existing passive cell balancing circuit, and I need the pinout of EQ1-EQ16 pins in a connector for a connection with my circuit, how to do that? Can I use the Test points S0-S15 or the DNP pins of C1-C16. Pl do support on this issue

  • Hi Jeevan,

As long as you are replacing the circuit with all of the required components then you can do this at either spot that you mention. It may be easier to design a custom schematic instead of this method but it is ultimately up to you.

  • Hi Taylor,

Replacing which circuit? Your first line of the reply is confusing.

Let me put question in different way,

Case 1: I connect 16 LEDs externally to test points S0-S15 and set BALANCE_EN register of bq76PL455a-Q1 to 0xAAAA, 8 of LEDs to be ON and other to be OFF, does this will work?

Case 2: I connect 16 LEDs externally to test points C1-C16 and set BALANCE_EN register of bq76PL455a-Q1 to 0xAAAA, 8 of LEDs to be ON and other to be OFF, does this will work?

Can you please confirm, is this what your insisting with your first line?

  • Hi Jeevan,

By replacing the circuit I am referring to the components that are required for external cell balancing (FET, caps, resistors) shown in the reference schematic on the left side of the test points. In theory yes, you could replace at those locations with LEDs but there are LEDs already on board so I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish. Again, my recommendation would be to fabricate a new schematic/layout.

  • Hi Taylor,

What I am trying to accomplish the LED should glow but not passive balancing to occur, (i.e.) the FET should not be driven, in that case like you said 2K resistor to depopulate, will this work?

  • Hi Taylor,

In academics, there limitations regarding both time and monetary resources, so I have to double-triple check, opinionated every possibility before ordering something, so pl understand from that perspective. And I have an another question:

Can all the EQ1-EQ16 pins be made HIGH at the same time?

    Regards

    Jeevan NK

  • Hi Jeevan,

In that case maybe it would be good if you draw out the schematic that you want to build so we are clear on what you are wanting to change. Yes, you can enable all EQ pins using the balance_en register.
