BQ40Z50-R2: Prevent Inhibit Charge at higher temperatures

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2

Is it possible to disable the inhibit charge start at high temperature

I'm using a BQ40Z50R2 with a Li-Ion battery that can operate up to 85 deg C

I would like to set a value for T4 around 60 and still start to charge even if the battery is already above that.

  • Hi Mark,

You are the one that determines the value that the inhibit function kicks in by setting the temperature ranges. Did you do that and the gauge didn't inhibit charging?

    thanks

  • Hi Onyx

    Thanks for the reply.

I have set the temperature ranges and charging does get inhibited above T3, my question is can I disable that.

My battery has a maximum working temperature of 85 deg C

I'm currently working with the battery manufacturer to determine the exact values for the temperature ranges and the associated charge current & voltage but we would like to set T3 around 60 deg C but still start charging if we are above that.

  • Hello Mark,

    Perhaps an obvious question:

Did you set the current value for that temperature range to 0 mA? This is uncommon for JEITA ranges. Make sure you also have JEITA enabled. This will set the ChargeCurrent register zero, but will not inhibit charge unless your charger supports it.

Other than that, you could check if the TRM: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/sluubk0b/sluubk0b.pdf

Section 4.13 may be of good reference.

Make sure to test this out on an EVM prior to implementation in your system.
