TPS2546: Are TPS2546 could pass MFI certification ?

Part Number: TPS2546
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54302, TPS2549-Q1, TPS254900-Q1

Hi teams

My customer is used TPS2546 in a BT speaker project. This BT speaker has a USB charging output port for an external portable device for charging.

We design with TPS54302+TPS2546 to achieve 5V output with BC1.2 and vbus current limit function.

Customer recently request to pass MFI certification but i am not sure could TPS2546 could meet their requirement?

Below is my question:

  1. For MFI certification are Auto mode or "force DCP divider 1" mode should be configurated?
  2. As TPS2546 will discharge the VBUS output and stay low for at least 1S, I suggest customer to operate under force divider 1 mode.
  3. Are extra MFI chip is needed in our BT speaker? Or we just need an MFI compliant USB cable?

Below is the test result from the customer. They feedbacks that the D+/D- voltage level still not meet MFI requirement.

  • Hello Gabriel,

We did not run MFi with the TPS254x devices. What I can confirm is that our customers have passed CarPlay certification  with TPS2549-Q1 and TPS254900-Q1 on their Head Unit. Tests that TPS2549-Q1 and TPS254900-Q1 involved are MFi VBUS spec, and eye diagram test. Since these tests are system level test, we normally say compatible instead of compliant.

Would you be able to elaborate on this specific test you are seeing a failure? Explaining the flow of the test itself

  • Hi McGaffin

So you mean that you are not sure whether a charger port with TPS2546 could pass MFI standard or not?

I am also checking with the customer. What I have known is customers have a requirement for VBUS with 1A output current.

  • Hi Gabriel,

Correct, we have not performed MFi compliance for the TPS2546. The TPS2546 does support Divider 1 charging which is the 1A output charging mode.
