BQ24650 - question regarding MPPT

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650

1, Refer to sluu444a_bq24650 page 3, Vmppset can be defined by adjusting R17&R19 value. Then as stated 'Once the voltage sensed on the MPPSET pin drops below 1.2 V, the charger maintains the input voltage by reducing the charge current.' Does this mean Vmppset is the maximum input Voltage the bq24650 will accept?

2, Is the default termination for charging process is by detecting charging current?
Thank you in advance.
  • The bq24650 can accept an input voltage up to 28V.   The resistor divider R17 & R19 are used to set the MINIMUM voltage on the input to the charger.  With a highly resistive input source or a solar cell, pulling more current from the source makes the source voltage drop.  If the source voltage drops to the voltage set by the resistor divider (making the voltage at MPPSET = 1.2V, the bq24650 reduces the charge current.  This keeps the input source voltage from dropping below the set voltage.  For the bq24650EVM, the source voltage will not drop below 17.8V.  As long as the source voltage is higher than 17.8V, the bq24650 charges at full current.

The bq24650 charge termination is a combination of both voltage and current.  Please refer to the bq24650 datasheet, paragraph "CHARGE TERMINATION AND RECHARGE" on page 13 for a detailed description of the conditions necessary to terminate a charge cycle.
