BQ25890: Default settings overwrite via I2C & USB C PD

Part Number: BQ25890
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EV2400, BQ25606

Hello,

I believe the BQ25890 really fulfills my needs, though I am uncertain about Section 9.3.1 in its manual.

1.

To clarify: is it possible to design a device with BQ25890 and reprogram it with EV2400 (or any I2C master) one time only before deploying it into the field, or does it always need to be connected to a host, even after weeks?

It is a small project of mine and I have space constraints. I would like to:

lower the Default Battery Charge Voltage and Boost Mode Frequency

increase the Default Charge Current and Input Current Limit (and maybe disable ILIM pin and read from memory only, no resistor needed)

2.

Lastly, it considers to be compatible with USB C as shown in the filter for Battery Charger IC, any tips or resources for that? It doesnt seem to have a USB PD PHY or CC pin inputs.

Thanks

  • Hi Karim,

Regarding 1, if you disable the watchdog timer then make the I2C register changes, the register settings will stay as long as the IC has power either at BAT or VBUS.  Can your application handle the IBAT-HiZ current drain?

Regarding 2, BQ25890 is not USB type 3 compatible but is USB BC1.2 compatible and can communicate with certain high voltage adapters (HVDCP) for the purpose of setting input current limit. If you are not using this feature then I suggest shorting D+=D- and using the ILIM pin resistor as the startup input current limit.

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • BQ25890 Ibt HiZ mode power consumption of 12uA is of no big deal.

I guess the BQ25606 will do the same job with no programming needed? Too bad, because it is way less flexible and comes with all the unnecessary BOM, yet has almost the same features.

Does TI have a product feedback platform? When searching for 1-cell LiIon chargers, there are so many nearly identical products but none satisfy basic needs. (258XX series...) Would be so awesome to suggest pin configurations and functions and use them in future products...

    Thank you

  • Karim,

You can submit suggestions in this forum and we will communicate to our development team.
