TPS2819: Burning issue

Part Number: TPS2819

I am using TPS2819 to drive MOSFET IRF540.

Mosfet is driving Proportional Solenoid.

I am facing issue with few of my drivers burning after working for more than 3-4 months.

PWM from miceocontroller is 5V @ 250HZ.

I am attaching my circuit here.

Please let me know if any mistakes in circuit.

  • Hi Mohan,

    Thanks for using our drivers.

Are there additional components failing or "burning" beside the gate driver? How many drivers fail?

Is there a reason for high value 10k resistor R3? I assume you're using TPS2819 to turn-on the MOSFET but with 10k value, and 5V gate drive, losses on the FETs will be high.

IRF device is specified for 72nC total gate charge @ Vgs 10V. Is there a reason for 5V gate drive voltage? Is TPS2819 powered off of 5V MCU?

    Regards,

    -Mamadou

  • Apart from TPS2819 burning my Micro controller is failing.

No particular reason for using for using 10 K Resistor R3, i saw a setup using 10K resistor between Gate driver Output and MOSFET Gate so using.

    Regards,

    Mohan

  • Mohan,

What does failure mechanism look like? Does MCU fail first? What is powering the failing MCU? What does the IN signal look like?

  • Hello Mohan,

I have not heard from you, I will therefore assume that you this issue is closed and mark this thread as resolved. If so, please press the green button or let us know if you have further questions by further posting on this thread.

  • Failure is MCU Doesnot turn ON and it is heating.

    MCU is powered using LM2576-5.

We are not sure whether MCU fails first or TPS2819.

Input signal is PWM Signal og 5V P-P  and duty cycle vary from 0-70%.

    Regards,

    Mohan

  • Mohan,

The issue could be related to heating from MCU which you might want to double check Junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of MCU especially at high duty cycles. I suspect the failure likely occurred at high duty cycle where rise in junctions temperatures might have exceeded the thermal ratings of the device to cause the device to fail.

Please let us know if you have any additional applications questions.

    Regards,

    -Mamadou
