EV2400: I2C Connection issue

Hi Team,

I'm posting on behalf of our customer. He is having issues with the EV2400 I2C connection. SMBus works well and the set-up has been made across multiple BQ34Z100-G1 boards. He tried using EV2300 and the connection was successful. The firmware has been updated but bqstudio still unable to recognize the device.

Hi Jejomar,

When you start bqstudio when the device is connected what screen pops up. Can you take a screen shot of the window that pops up when the device fails to be detected. Also are you sure those devices are functional? How did the firmware update occur if you are unable to communicate with the device? Did the customer place the bqz file of the device in the config folder of bqstudio?

In addition to Onyx's question, can you further check what is the pull up voltage and pull up resistor of your target boards, since he can use EV2300 to communicate with the device, it indicates that customer target boards has pull ups to the I2C, as the I2C of EV2300 does not have any pull ups.

But EV2400 does have pull ups on I2C, please check if the communication can be success if customer removes the pull up on the target boards.

I think you missunderstand.

We have an another EV2400 and there the I2C communication works well with the same communication object.

I measured the pull-up resistors at the start of bqstudio:

UR13 = 308,10mV
UR13-@startbqstudio = 266,16mV

UR14 = 307,95mV
UR14-@startbqstudio = 267,32mV

Are you measuring voltage on SMBC and SMBD on the J3? Is the EV2400 connected to J3? what is the reference point when you measured the voltage at SMBC and SMBD?

Since EV2400 has the pull up, can you try to turn off Q8 to disable the pull up at J3 if EV2400 is connected to it?

sorry， my fault, turn off Q8 is not adequate, please try to remove R13 and R14 when connecting EV2400

From the screen shots, it appears your ev2400 is working just fine. It shows version 0.28. Pls update your bqstudio to the latest version on ti.com as i see you are still using version .54. Do the LEDs on your ev2400 light up?

Hi,

are you sure that i should remove R13 and R14? But if my battery has no pull up resis. it would not work...

I do not believe the ev2400 is the problem. Did you say the ev2300 works ok? Can you used that instead? Does multiple boards behave this way?

Hi,

I think it is a problem of the hardware :/.

Because we have 3 devices to communicate with the battery pack:

1. EV2300 = it works well with I2C with the same battery pack

2. EV2400 = I2C works not but SMB works with the same battery pack

3.EV2400 = I2C and SMB works well with the same battery pack

Yeah it appears the issue is with that hardware in question. Use a different device then
